Sébastien Tellier
Sébastien Tellier belongs to a rare breed of artists who combine musical skills, humor and intimism, a talent reminiscent of the likes of Robert Wyatt, Syd Barret or Serge Gainsbourg. A thorough individualist, a free-spirited rebel, a Parisian poet and a multi-talented “enfant terrible”.
Since 2001 and his world tour alongside Air, promoting his debut release “L’Incroyable Vérité”, he has been performing his anti-conformist, emotionally charged act to an ever-growing audience. He went from opening for Röyksopp during their European tour, as well as for The Magic Number, to headlining shows at legendary Parisian concert hall L’Olympia and London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. A series of gigs that established Tellier as a solid live act and earned him worldwide acclaim.
His second album “Politics”, released in 2004, includes collaborations with a number of renowned artists, such as Tony Allen, the father of afro-beat, or Theremin-player extraordinaire Pamelia Kurstin. “La Ritournelle” is a particularly collaboration-heavy single from the album – a song familiar to many, but whose singer is frequently unknown. 2006’s “Sessions” is an acoustic rendition of his repertoire in partnership with pianist Simon Dalmais.
“Sexuality” (2008) is a departure from his previous work. With this third album, the man who once said in an interview “Sex is the only thing I’m interested in” delivers a sort of sexual odyssey. Except for one track (L’Amour et la Violence), he gives up his trademark acoustic sound in favor of an electronic direction, produced by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Right after the release of the album, Tellier is chosen to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the single “Divine”.
When Tellier is not busy producing his own work, remixing other artists or lending them his voice, he dedicates himself to cinema and contemporary arts, as he did for Xavier Veilhan, or by being the leading actor in “Non Film” and “Steak”, both by Quentin Dupieux. It comes as no surprise that Tellier has worked on the soundtracks of both “Non Film” and “Narco”, as well as “Steak” and “Electroma” by Daft Punk (penning the track “Universe”).
