Stephan Crasneanscki
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1969, Stephan Crasneanscki is an artist based in New York. After receiving a BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, he created Soundwalk in 2000. His first sound routes in Chinatown and the Lower East Side became immediate classics. The Adidas foundation gave him a blank check to create three new Soundwalks, among them a tour of Bronx with Jazzy Jay and Afrika Bambaataa, which won the Audie Award in 2004. Next, Soundwalk developed a global catalog with productions in Paris, London, Berlin, China, India and Spain, which have since won numerous prizes: the 2005 Dalton Pen Award for the Sonic Memorial Soundwalk of Ground Zero with Paul Auster, the 2007 Audie Award for the Williamsburg Hasidic Soundwalks and the 2009 Audie Award for the Beijing Soundwalk with Gong Li. Stephan Crasneanscki regularly collaborates with big-name brands and cultural institutions: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, the Louvre, Lille 3000...
“Kill the Ego” is the first sound work that Stephan Crasneanscki has created to show the fruits of his ten years of sound harvesting in New York City. After “Kill the Ego,” Stephan wove together a unique sonic world of 24 hours for Philippe Starck: “24 Hours: The Starck Mix”, in partnership with Wallpaper. In 2010, after the presentation of “Kill the Ego” at the Pompidou Center, Stephan Crasneanscki will unveil a new sound work entitled “Ulysses Syndrome” at the universal Exposition of Shanghai, in the Lille 3000 pavilion, a work of memory that revisits through sound the odyssey of Ulysses, in which a 24-hour sonic tapestry weaves together the Hertzian frequencies captured on and around the Mediterranean Sea.
